RTB holds a National Dialogue on TVET for youth employment and future of work
Rwanda TVET Board (RTB) in collaboration with TVET Development Partners and stakeholders on Thursday, 19th May 2022, held a National Dialogue on TVET for youth employment and future of work.
The dialogue aimed at increasing awareness on TVET for more job creation and youth employment through a sound private sector engagement was attended by members of the Private Sector Federation, Ministries and other relevant public Institutions, Professional and Regulatory bodies, Local Government, Research Institutions, Schools and Higher Learning Institutions, TVET Development Partners and TVET authorities from Kenya, Burundi, DRC and South Africa.
The event was also graced by Dr. Uwamariya Valentine, Minister of Education, Hon. Claudette Irere, Minister of State in charge of ICT and TVET and Hon. Kayirangwa Rwanyindo Fanfan, Minister of Public Service and Labour.
In her remarks, Dr. Uwamariya said that TVET has to respond to the needs of the labour market and create a competent, motivated & adaptable workforce capable of driving economic growth. Noting that such a TVET system has been adopted by Rwanda to provide the proper response to the NST1 ambitious goals.
“Private sector-led TVET system will enable productivity, and enhance competitiveness. It is expected to play a key role in various forms of skills development namely industrial attachment, internship, responsive curricula and occupational standards development.” She added.
While delivering a presentation on #TVET in Rwanda and the Future of Work, DG RTB, Dipl.-Ing. Paul Umukunzi said that TVET plays a key role in Skills Development for economic transformation, decent Job creation, youth employment and increase in local productivity to reduce dependence on imports.
This was emphasized by Hon. Rwanyindo who said that for an effective prediction of the future labour market trends, everyone must accept that a curriculum developed by academics must always be supplemented by industry requirements or local and international needs.
"While we plan the TVET and future of work, we must not only prepare our TVET graduates as job seekers but also as future job creators and we have some good examples of TVET graduates who have already successfully created companies and they are now big employers." She emphasized.
The National Dialogue on TVET for youth employment and the Future of work was concluded by recognizing and appreciating Private Companies for their support of TVET Development and Workplace Learning.
